These are found worldwide. They have a shorter tail than other mice and are coloured variously from grey to brown or black, although all normally have a grey belly. They live in family groups of up to 8-9. Mice urinate all the time they move about and will deposit 40-50 droppings a day. They are excellent climbers. Period of gestation is 21 days and are weaned in 3-4 weeks. They reach sexual maturity in 9-10 weeks.
