Mainly brought in by cats and dogs and are found worldwide. They will breed at quite a rate with 4-8 eggs laid after a meal of blood. About 1000 eggs will be laid in a lifetime. They will hatch within 10 days. Fleas jump huge distances for their size and will move rapidly through hair and carpet fibres. They eat animal and human blood and the larvae eat droppings of their own and regurgitated food.
Effective control often means fumigation and a thorough treatment with a residual insecticide.
Please don't believe the claims of aerosol cans of so say flea spray. They cost £20 or more and will effectively treat a dog bed. That's all. We typically use about 5 litres of very much stronger residual insecticide to a room for it to be effective. This is the reallity. Don't waste your money. |
