It was recently reported by a farmer that certain rat bait was not working. Enquiries were made by the manufacturer with the farmer and it was realised that he had not used sufficient bait or even put it down where it was likely to be taken. He had not thought about where the rats came from or where they were going to.
A proper baiting program was put in place, with these points in mind and total control was gained in 4 weeks. This shows that it is not just a matter of putting bait down. A full understanding of the local circumstances must be gained for the matter to be addressed properly.
It also highlights how rats can become resistant to the bait. The farmer had put out several small quantities of bait in just a few places. It was all going but evidence of rats still remained. Many rats were eating a small quantity of bait and supplementing this with food such as animal feed and wheat found in stores on the farm. If he had continued the same way, none of the rats would have eaten enough to kill and over time they would have become resistant to the bait.
